Crafting Ceremonial Cacao

The process of crafting ceremonial cacao is a long, sacred journey. It all begins with a deep devotion to the land where it grows—cultivated organically near ancient jade deposits and farmed in accordance with the profound Mayan reconnection to the earth. The cacao beans are sun-dried, carefully roasted over a traditional clay comal, and then peeled entirely by hand. Once peeled, the beans are ground by hand on a metate (grinding stone). Every single utensil used is strictly sanitized, cleaned with alcohol, and spiritually asked for permission before we work with the medicine. Because this cacao is fully energized by Mayan spiritual leaders, neither metal nor machines ever touch it, ensuring its spiritual energy remains entirely pure. This is the traditional, ancestral way of preparing cacao, allowing its true medicine to function at its highest potential.Although the conquistadors tried to abolish these sacred practices, the Maya people protected them at all costs. Over time, other foreign exploiters arrived, stealing, enslaving the people, and committing terrible atrocities. They took cacao to other parts of the world, breaking it down and mixing it with artificial elements to create sugary chocolate. In doing so, the world forgot the traditional, sacred use of the medicine, and its true purpose was torn apart. At one point, cacao almost went extinct as other commercial farms pushed it out.To this day, Maya nations like the Q'eqchi' nation have protected this sacred knowledge. They continue to fight with their very lives to protect their lands, their altars, and this cacao from destruction. Cacao has been shared with the world to help restore balance, harmony, and healing on both a personal and global level. We must never forget the sacredness of this special medicine and its purpose. We must protect it and honor the traditional ways. Cacao is here for us, reminding us that we are all deeply interconnected.

True Ceremony

I wanted to share a closer look at what actually makes cacao Kotzij’—which is the authentic Mayan term for ceremonial cacao. For me, if it’s going to be truly ceremonial, it has to follow these traditional steps: Eco-friendly farming: It needs to come from an organic farm that respects the local wildlife. In Guatemala, it’s even better if it grows near jade deposits. Old-school prep: The beans have to be sun-dried, wood-fire roasted in a clay skillet, and peeled by hand. Hand-ground: It must be ground by hand using a metate (a grinding stone). The stone's pores give it a feminine energy, which is different from stones with masculine energy. Respect and gratitude: Following the sacred Popol Wuj, every tool is thanked and cleaned. The people making it also cleanse themselves and ask the energies for permission to work with the cacao.Feminine energy: There are parts of the process where only women can handle the cacao. Since cacao is feminine, masculine energy at certain points can actually disrupt its essence. No metals: Tools made of iron or steel can never touch the cacao because they cut away its spirit and energy.Spiritual blessings: Mayan spiritual leaders have to energize the cacao during Kotzij’ or other sacred ceremonies.Thinking 400 years ahead: Everyone working with the cacao has to have the right intentions. That means protecting the Earth and the community so there's no negative impact on the next 400 years of future generations. No factories: Industrial machines and factories just don't vibe with the energy of the cacao. And honestly, there’s so much more!

What is Ceremonial Cacao?

What’s ceremonial cacao and why should you drink it?  The Mayans have used cacao for thousands of years, and it has some amazing benefits. You can basically think of it as a top-tier super-herb because of how much it helps your body. It does wonders for your heart, relaxes your muscles, and even helps open up your lungs so you can breathe deeper. Plus, it’s packed with antioxidants.  But cacao goes even deeper than that. It actually crosses the blood-brain barrier to regulate brain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. This gives you a natural feeling of happiness and stress relief, while keeping your mind clear and focused so you can go through your day mindfully.  The Mayans also believed it’s one of the few foods that can connect with your spirit, boost your empathy, deepen your connection to nature, and heal you from the inside out!
